ACDHT: Asian Conference of Design History and Theory
We are pleased to announce the 4th international conference on design history and theory in Asia dealing with various design-related topics scheduled to be held once every other year. With the cooperation of a number of related associations and academic bodies, the conference will be held in parallel with eight groups regular meetings and an annual general meeting. A specific theme will be established for each conference, and the event will be defined by its relatively small scale and lack of a general session.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Although the academic disciplines of Design Studies and Design History have their origins in modern Western culture/society, there is a growing tendency to emphasize the archetypal nature of design throughout the world. Furthermore, one branch of Design Studies/Historiography focuses on originality of design in a particular regional culture or country.
The purpose of the 4th ACDHT conference on “The Culture of Design and
Design in Culture” is 1) to shed light on interactions of design and culture in the age of globalization and 2) to grasp more deeply the value and potential of design as an academic discipline.
The ACDHT 2021 OSAKA is now accepting submissions of abstracts based on the theme of “The Culture of Design and Design in Culture” with reference to the following topics::
- 1. The Culture of design
- 2. Design in Culture
- 3. Design and the Age of Globalization
All submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the conference committee and the authors will be notified of the decision by the mid May 2021. If the abstract is accepted, the submitting author will be asked to present a 20-minute written paper in person at the conference (please note that the conference might be held “online,” depending on COVID-19 related circumstances. See “PRESENTATION FORMATS” for more information). After the conference, the authors are encouraged to submit journal-quality papers (approximately 3,000 words in English), which will be reviewed by the conference committee and, if accepted, published in The Journal of the Asian Conference of Design History and Theory (ISSN 2189-7155; electronic version only).
Please submit your abstract to office2019[at]acdht.com([at] should be replaced by @) by March 31, 2021. Each submission should contain the followings in the Microsoft Word file:
- 1) An abstract of app. 300 words
- 2) Full contact details: Author(s)’s name, affiliation, and email address
- 3) Author(s)’s short academic biography

PRESENTATION FORMAT
Due to the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the decision that the conference would be an online only conference (virtual conference). With this change, there will be no registration fee. For more information, please see the Programs and Registration page.
